The EP sold out its 500-unit run. DeMarco was joined by Alex Calder and Jen Clement, and Makeout Videotape was signed to Unfamiliar Records. Heat Wave was followed by two EPs, Eating Like a Kid and Bossa Yeye, and one studio album, Ying Yang, all in 2010. In 2012, DeMarco went back to recording as a solo artist and was signed by Captured Tracks.
He expresses a desire to escape on “Finally Alone” and “Hey Cowgirl,” both of which are punctuated with plucky guitar chords and soft snare hits. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Mac DeMarco album if it didn’t feature a love song or two, and he dutifully delivers on the plainspoken, romantic “K” and “Heart to Heart.”.
Changed name to Mac DeMarco from 'Vernor Winfield McBriare Smith IV' at age 5 after his mother's maiden name (Agnes DeMarco). Released Bandcamp and cassette releases under the alias Makeout Videotape (which also included Alex Calder for live performances) prior to signing w/ Captured Tracks and going by his real name.
Mac is not a coo in the slightest, and Pitchfork knew this. They had the money to consider him over the next few years, and to be self-sustaining after X amount of press and promotion. Mac DeMarco was a perfect marketing storm, and 2 was still a damn good album. Salad Days came 2 years after the aforementioned album.
